Al B Sure! Off Your Own (Girl) (Warner Bros.)

Brown III was initially thought to become a US football superstar, judging by the way he was doin’ at High School in NY.He nevertheless decided to reject an athletic scholarship to the University of Iowa to pursue a music career. He therefore got selected by Quincy Jones as the first winner of the Sony Innovators Talent Search back in 1987, eventually working with him on various projects, beginning with the memorable ‘The Secret Garden (Sweet Seduction Suite)’ from his double-platinum-certified album ‘Back On The Block’, sharing the vocal duties with Barry White, El DeBarge, and James Ingram.
The year after would see the release of his debut-album – ‘In Effect Mode’ – which saw him getting his biggest successes with ‘Night & Day’ (seen by some as the first New Jack Swing cut) and ‘Off Your Own (Girl)’, enlightened with his falsetto performances, with production work by the likes of his own cousin (Kyle West) and surrounded by Andre Harrell as an executive producer who soon after launched his own Uptown Records label;
As a writer and producer, he introduced the multi-platinum group Jodeci and teen R&B performer Tevin Campbell (another Quincy Jones‘s former protégés), as well as Faith Evans and Usher among others to the music industry…
