Tennerz: The Foreign Exchange – Can’t Turn Around (Shino Blackk Edit) (Z Records)
Strange as to how one can rate things at times. Just like this jam filed as Soulful House on Traxsource which, to me, sounds quite reductive…
A quick listen suffices to realize as to how it’s way beyond, bringing us back to the heydays of Jazz/Funk. So let’s get back to the origin of this track. A cut which originally surfaced back in 2013 as a part of their ‘Love In Flying Colours’ album.
Back then, it had that flavor one could find while listening to Earth Wind & Fire or George Duke. In other words a blend of Latin Jazz/Funk vibes. Not to mention those typical falsetto tones in the vocals. With thanks to guest singer Gwenn Bunn adding much to it.
I suppose I could say we were not that far away from Broken Beat on the original version. And what Shino Blackk has done here is that he’s subtly boosted the rhythm pattern. The result is simply awesome and irresistible, therefore showcasing a definitive connection between the band and the remixer…
You just can’t turn around this. You get into it, don’t you think?

Everything and its contrary has been said about Internet. One could say on one side how it has badly put an attempt to economy as far as music is concerned. But we can’t deny on the other as to how it has been of a help in creating music such as illustrated by The Foreign Exchange.
Hard to believe this duo made of Dutch producer Matthijs L.N. Rook and US Rapper Phonte Coleman never managed to have a single chat over the phone while in the process of recording their first album – ‘Connected – back in 2004!
Since then, the pair have released 5 albums, in a mood blending their Funk, R&B and Soul influences with Latin Jazz and House vibes. No wonder why labels such as Reel People Music and more recently Z Records have snapped some of their pieces of music.
