Lowrell – Mellow Mellow Right On

Classics: Lowrell – Mellow Mellow Right On (AVI Records)

The least we can say is that the calender this year hasn’t been that cool. Getting us back to our respective activities almost without transition. Nothing we can do about this though apart from takin’ it as easy as possible. And what a better piece than the aptly titled ‘Mellow Mellow Right On’ to do so?!?

From his 1979 eponymous album on Władziu Valentino Liberace‘s AVI Records label, ‘Mellow Mellow Right On’ has most likely immortalized Lowrell Simon. With countless artists sampling it since. From Massive Attack to Common and Imagination. Not to mention Zhané.

One of the most lazy and smooth jams ever. Blending these famous chords inherited from Disco with lush synths parts over a funky bassline and a lascivious beat…

Given back a promo copy of it back then by French distributor Vogue Records which pressed it on 33RPM, I incidentally realized it could eventually be played at 45RPM – 8% which surprised a lot of people at the time…

Overview
Born in Chicago, IL on Mar. 18, 1943, Lowrell Simon started singing along with The LaVondells which soon after became The Vondells. They eventually enjoyed some regional success in the 60’s.
Lowrell came to form The Lost Generation along with Fred Simon, Jesse Dean and Larry Brownlee, when The Vondells disbanded. Together they released 2 albums – ‘The Sly, Slick And The Wicked’ and ‘Young, Tough And Terrible’ on Brunswick. The group broke up in the mid 70’s. They released a last single – ‘Your Mission (If You Decide To Accept It)’ – back in the Summer of 74 on Innovation II Records.

From then, Simon contributed to the soundtrack to the 1974 film, ‘Three The Hard Way’. He wrote ‘Dance Master’ for Willie Henderson that same year. He also wrote tracks for Mystique‘s 1976 debut-album, then ‘All About The Paper’ for Loleatta Holloway 3 years later.

Lowrell began recording under his first name by the same period. He signed a record deal with AVI Records where he released his eponymous album back in 1979. It spanned 3 singles including ‘Mellow Mellow Right On’. He released his very last single – ‘Love Massage’ – 2 years later on Zoo York Recordz.
