Michael Wycoff – Looking Up To You VS Zhané – Hey Mr. DJ

Michael Wycoff – Looking Up To You (RCA)
Despite an undeniable talent, he sang backup on Stevie Wonder‘s ‘Song In The Key of Life’ prior signing a record deal as a solo artist with RCA for which he released three albums, Michael Wycoff sadly lost himself and everything around him due to drug addiction. He’s most likely remembered for the Leon Ware penned and Webster Lewis produced ‘Looking Back To You’, taken from his 1982 released ‘Love Conquers All’ album, with backing vocals courtesy of French group New Paradise which would get sampled 11 years after by R&B female duo Zhané on their classic ‘Hey Mr. DJ’.
Zhané – Hey Mr. DJ (Motown)
Initially released as a part of the ‘Roll Wit Tha Flava’ compilation on Flavor Unit Records back in 1993, then as the opening cut to their 1994 released ‘Pronounced Jah-Nay’ album, Renée Neufville and Jean Norris makin’ their debut and eventually scoring their biggest success ever on this Naughty By Nature produced R&B cool jam sampling Michael Wycoff‘s ‘Looking Up To You’ and leading it to gain extra interest soon after on the second hand market.
