Millie Jackson – What Went Wrong Last Night (Parts 1 and 2) (Spring Records)

A specific tone, but also an instantly standout style would be for much on Millie Jackson’recognition in the 70’s. Who could ever forget her 1974 released cover version of Luther Ingram‘s classic ‘(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want to Be Right’ or her other cover version, this time of Exile‘s ‘Kiss You All Over’???
Taken from her 1979 released ‘A Moment’s Pleasure’ album which features the latter, ‘What Went Wrong last Night’ to me pretty much embodies what the singer is about, with its inserted spoken section expanding its live feel with production work by the likes of Brad Shapiro, along with string horns arranged by David Van DePitte over an infectious beat courtesy of Muscle Shoals Rhythm section.

I hardly understand though why Spring Records never gave it a single release…
