Rick James – Glow (Gordy)

Influenced by Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson, Rick James joined his heros when signing on Motown’s sister label Gordy Records back in 1977. His classics from then would be countless, under his own banner as with Stone City Band (his backing musicians) but also  The Tempations, Teena Marie and Mary Jane Girls which he happened to produce.
A few artists happened to have such a sense of the groove, meanwhile James would for some time be seen as a serious contender to Prince for supremacy.
We’re catching him back in 1985 on this firing ‘Glow’ from the album of the name along with LaMorris ‘Fein’ Payne on a devastating trumpet solo…
Heavily addicted (he admitted spending a US$ 7,000 on drugs a week for five years, James‘s behavior with women led him to get to jail a few times.
He died of a heart failure on this day back in 2004 at the age of 56…
