Sheila Chandra – Waiting (Afro Deep Club Mix) (Spacecraft)

A London-born artist of Indian descent, Sheila Chandra paved the way for what was to become the British-Asian sound by the second half of the nineties with artists such as Talvin Singh, Nitin Sawhney and State Of Bengal, when blending Western and Indian vibes along with Steve Coe and bass player Martin Smith under their Moonson guise some 15 years before…
As a threesome, they released only one album – ‘Third Eye’ – in 1982, and from then, Sheila released her music as a solo artist, eventually using her voice as an instrument via a range of various techniques. Something one can effectively feel on this rare 12 inch released back in 2003 on French label Spacecraft seeing her chant given a new dimension over a magnetic Deep Tech groove built in a trancey way.
An absolute highlight on its own, showing how the blend of various influences may give birth to unsuspected new horizons. Alas, in 2010, she would develop a burning mouth syndrome, that got her unable to sing or even speak, laugh or cry without suffering intense pain, rendering her effectively mute…
