Shota – Never Give Up (Original Mix)

Tennerz: Timmy Regisford presents Shota – Never Give Up (Original Mix) (Tribe Records)

I discovered Shota back in 2011 on a track called ‘Yini Ngawe’. A song taken from Culoe de Song‘s ‘Elevation’ album, which he performed in both Zulu and English. What a blast this happened to be. With the first impression coming to mind being the one of an incredible charisma…

Digging further into what he has been into along with time, I would be tempted to say charisma is a definitive part of the man’s DNA. With the man giving a lot of input into what he expresses. ‘Never Give Up’, that sees him collaborating once more with Timmy Regisford, makin’ no exception.

There, he delivers a message of encouragement for those of us facing tough things in life. And in the meantime, a message of self encouragement. This, after his last-born son sadly got diagnosed with cancer which left him blind. ‘Never Give Up (in life)’… A message we can’t do anything but fully subscribe to. Wishing everything will get better for his little boy at the end.
Let’s all join hands and pray for this to happen…

Overview
Born in Durban, RSA, Mnqobi Mdabe (aka Shota) grew up and went to school in Umata in the Eastern Cape. After matric, he enrolled at the Natal Technikon in Kwa-Zulu Natal for a diploma in music. He eventually also worked as a voice lecturer at a college from Ntuzuma township.

It’s during this period that he came to meet Nkosinathi Maphumulo and Thandukwazi Sikhosana. In other words Black Coffee and Demor. The three of them forming an Afro-Pop trio named SHANA (Simply Hot And Naturally African) back in 1997.

Shota launched his solo career by the end of 2011. Speaking of his influences, he quotes Busi Mhlongo and the Soul Brothers. But also Ladysmith Black Mambazo, “who were celebrated at home as well as overseas…”

He created his own label – Shota Music – where he has released 4 albums so far, including the 2015 ‘Timeless’. An album which has seen him collaborating with US producers Timmy Regisford, Adam Rios and Mark Francis.

Shota has received extra echo abroad with UK label Tribe Records licensing three of his songs. From ‘Be 10’ to ‘Say Something’. With ‘Never Give Up’ completing the list as of yet.
