Snoop Dogg – Who Am I (What’s My Name?) (Death Row Records)

Long Beach, CA-based Snoop Dogg got discovered by G-Rap mogul/entrepreneur Dr. Dre who featured him on his 1992 released debut-album,’The Chronic’. Dogg doing the same with his ‘Doggystyle’ album the year after, followed by the soundtrack for the Dr. Dre and Fab Freddy directed film ‘Murder Was The Case’ in which he also starred as an actor.
The lead single of ‘Doggystyle’, ‘What’s My Name’ started it all for Broadus, built on a clever blend of interpolations from George Clinton‘s ‘Atomic Dog’and Parliament‘s ‘Give Up The Funk’ mixed with various short samples. This would in the meantime serve as the typical illustration of what was to become a dominant West Coast style remembered as G-Rap / G-Funk, as developed by other artists such as Warren G, Tupac, or Willie D to name but a few…
