The Politics Of Dancing #46: Music is the timeline of our lives…

Music TimelineI’m pretty much positive as to how listening to music brings you invariably to images. This is what we call the power of transportation making it so essential in our lifetime as linking us to either imaginary situation (the dream), either specific fragments of our past (the reality). Of course this power (of transportation) is not limited to music. It could apply to a book or a movie, a landscape or a piece of architecture, a fragrance or a taste, but I would tend to figure – feel free to correct me if I’m wrong – music would be the first of them coming to mind, because of its proximity…

Just like definining who ever from hen and the egg came first, kinda hard to know whether music we come to listen to defines who we are or vice-versa, as the two seem so per se related. As for what I’m humbly concerned, I would tend to think I’ve been caught up by music that would pretty much define who I’ve become professionally speaking, with who I’ve become on a personal level defining the music I’ve been listening to along the years.

Nothing could predict back that the European guy I am would ever come to embrace the Afro-American culture, beginning with its music, unless a combination of circumstances in addition to my sensibility making the whole happening that way, I suppose.
Sitting next to piles of records covering 5 decades of music, I can say almost each of them brings me back to a specific souvenir, combined with its artwork and eventually its release date, which unfortunately has progressively become harder since the arrival of the mp3 format, so impersonal and cold as ice in comparizon, which makes me wonder if ever this hadn’t have any bad effect for the last generations. Beginning with the obvious lack of identification it has implied since the systematization of its releasing process. Time should tell, even though and despite its undeniable handiness, it’s way less exciting (and social to) to download a file than coming to be exposed to pieces of wax at one of the few remaining record stores here and there. With the same applying to DJing with a laptop as opposed to turntables!

First kiss, love of a lifetime, break up, holidays, birth, passing, memory… As many facts in life we may easily relate to from a specific piece of music. Music is the timeline of our lives, this making it so special. Let us know about yours…
