First Listen: Vince Watson – Calypso (Yoruba Records)
No matter what, the most interesting pieces of music come from the ones considering it with a wide angle. Something you can definitely tell about this joint standing as an invite to an exciting trip. A cut which, no surprisingly, is the work of a man – Vince Watson – who’s learnt piano in a classical way, before venturing into Ambient/Electronic sounds. Eventually makin’ himself quite a reputation in the Techno scene for his hypnotic constructions on labels such as Planet E or Poker Flat among others.
Sounding like a natural evolution to more spacey atmospheres… This fascinating immersion into deep’n’jazzy territories is definitely one of a kind. In a vein more or less reminding of John Beltran‘s excursions. Welcome aboard the ‘Calypso’.

DJing began for Vince Watson at his school’s weekend discos with a selection of Hip-Hop and early House records filling his box. He worked up a collection unlike any other young DJ. Meanwhile, he would visit the Royal Academy for Art, Music and Drama in Glasgow for piano lessons. This before Electronic and Ambient music grabbed his attention.
These influences are all clear in his productions. As many elegant and seductive compositions with emotional ambiences. With thanks to his skills of manipulating a keyboard. A maestria which allowed him to bring complex multichords and dense yet fully melodic patches to contemporary Dance Music.
While the Summer of Love was in full swing, Watson was in his bedroom honing his skills and immersing himself in Electronic music. He took influence from luminaries such as Herbie Hancock, Derrick May and Jean-Michel Jarre.
After learning his trade with Dave Angel‘s Rotation label, Vince watson helped facilitate the House-Techno cross over at the end of the Millennium. His debut-LP, ‘Biologique’ caused a catatonic impact in the global electronic scene. It set up a personal hypnotic perspective of groovy, melody and atmospheric sounds. He followed this with ‘Moments In Time’ on Ibadan Records. An album which helped him gaining worldwide recognition as one of Techno’s leading producers and live acts.
Vince Watson has never ceased breathing new life into Electronic music, as an artist, a DJ and a label manager.
He released an 800sample DVD free on the front cover of Computer Music Magazine worldwide which sold over 1 million copies. He also had his music featured on Sky‘s TV Series ‘Mad Dogs’. A Sonic academy tutorial was released later in 2013.
In 2015, his debut release on Osunlade’s Yoruba Records topped the charts for 6 weeks. Carl Craig and Josh Wink both remixed his tracks…
