Winter Music Conference: the pros and cons…

Spotlight: Winter Music Conference: the pros and cons…

From the MIDEM to the Amsterdam Dance Event and the Winter Music Conference. Not to mention the Southport Weekender, the Suncébeat and the SAMC… Each year comes along with the running of successive events. Each of them punctuating the diary of those who, one week after another, set up our musical environment. From artists to record execs, producers and DJ’s.
Is the investment worth the going? Like on almost every situation, there are the pros and the cons…

Winter Music Conference: the pros & cons...The pros…
The Winter Music Conference’s main assets resides in the fact that it takes part in Miami South Beach, FL. One of the hottest destinations in the world, at a period – March – coinciding with the famous Spring Break. This bringing the assurance for those searching for exposure of potentially meeting a lot of people. And by that, making new contacts, reinforce their networks and spend time with pals from all over the world at one place. Meanwhile, for the crowd, to see some of their favorite DJ’s and party all day long in the heat of the nights and days. While listening to some of the most upfront music one may think of.

As a long time observer, I gotta say I kinda liked it. And even more back at a time when the good ol’ vinyl was reigning. As it would be the vehicle to countless exchanges and discussions. This, as opposed to the current mp3 which one can get anonymously (and also unfortunately) from almost anywhere nowadays.

I remember these days as a period when, once renowned for what I was doin’, I clearly had the feeling of belonging to a community. Should I be attending to either NYC, NJ, Chicago or Detroit parties. This was definitely something which I couldn’t wait for from a year to another. This until the moment I started having the feeling it was loosing the scope. And most likely – just like Ibiza – because of the massive presence of people who didn’t have anymore anything to do with its original spirit. Almost transforming it into a magma of soulless sh..!

The cons…
There are always two sides speakin’ of a coin. Miami being one of the hottest destinations in the world, we’re therefore facing the law of the offer and the demand. And when the offer is saturated the way it normally is at holiday period, the prices are climbing. This making of the staying quite an investment.

I remember some friends in the circuit telling me this was more of a vacation time for them back in the day. Meaning that they didn’t expect a real return already back then. It is to say how, with the object now replaced by the mp3, it is even harder nowadays. With only the promoters left in the position to make money with the presentation of their events to a massive crowd. And in the meantime to make their shopping, while either securing deals with top DJ’s or recruiting upcoming talents.
Something you could notice during all these last years, with the WMC welcoming always more events. Therefore not allowing the real fans to enjoy them all…

No need to add how, judging by the current disorder of the record industry, one can wonder about the necessity of attending such events unless leaving in a close area. And this, when so much remains to be done in order to ensure a proper communication on a daily base. And eventually engender the necessary returns to those who invest money (and time) in keeping on providing us with quality music.
