Bardot & Gainsbourg – Bonnie And Clyde

Most Wanted! Brigitte Bardot & Serge Gainsbourg – Bonnie And Clyde (Fontana)

How could we ever blame someone for not knowing what he or she has never been exposed to?!? This most likely explaining the differences of cultures and / or backgrounds from a place to another. And, by that, makin’ life an everyday discovering experience for those willin’ to know more about their environment.

A big majority of you would probably have more heard about Jay-Z & Beyoncé‘s narration of the adventures of Bonnie And Clyde. Firstly because, it’s not as old as the one courtesy of Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot that brings us back to the end of the 60’s. And most likely also because of the language bareer. With the latter expressing themselves in French as opposed to Mr & Mme Z. Besides, and apart from the theme, there is no connection between those two songs…

When speakin’ of the late Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot, we’re bringin’ you in front of two icons of the French culture. With Gainsbourg most likely standing as the most complete French artist of all times. And actress Brigitte Bardot remembered as an international sex symbol in the 60’s/70’s. This meeting between the twosome givin’ birth to ‘Bonnie And Clyde’ back in 1968. Meawnhile standing itself as one of the first expressions of poetry in modern music. Two years before the arrival of The Last Poets and Gil Scott-Heron Stateside..

Gainsbourg has probably no equivalent in terms of lyricism. This to the exception of say MC Solaar. With the latter eventually sampling ‘Bonnie And Clyde’ on ‘Nouveau western’ more than 20 years after. ‘Bonnie And Clyde’, produced and arranged by Michel Colombier, opening the path to collaborations with other actresses. From Jane Birkin who eventually became his wife. To Catherine Deneuve and Isabelle Adjani.

Overview
Certainly the most complete French artist of all time… Serge Gainsbourg has embraced almost all the facets of the contemporary music. From Jazz to Reggae, Funk and Electronic. Eventually considered by some as the one who helped engender Trip-Hop.

His music, but also his lyrics, happened to be one of a kind. From absolute poetry to deliberated provocation. This when exploring subjects such as sex (by the end of the 60’s way before anyone else), incestuous fantasies, polemic and whatsoever.

Whatever he touched would, he turned into absolute artistry. Therefore no wonder why nor how he left such a strong legacy. Influencing countless people such as Air. But also French rapper MC Solaar who would come up with an interpolation of ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ – ‘Nouveau western’ – a few years after.

As a matter of fact, one would hardly find a more consistant and versatile repertoire to be learning French in the best conditions. With Gainsbourg most likely redefining the art of writing if not singing along with time. From his debut back in 1958 with the ‘Du chant à la une!…’ album. To his ultimate delivery – ‘You’re Under Arrest’ – in 1987, four years before his passing.

Among his definitive masterpieces, ‘Histoire de Melody Nelson’, a peak in terms of musicianship like you would hardly hear anywhere else. ‘L’homme à tête de chou’, ‘Je t’aime moi non plus’ and the OST of ‘Goodbye Emmanuelle’. His 1979 ‘Aux armes et caetera’ album seeing him flirting with Reggae vibes. And, seven years after, his ‘Love On The Beat’ album getting him to push forward the limits of provocation along with his daughter.

A talented painter and also an actor, Serge Gainsbourg sadly died of a heart attack on Mar. 02, 1991 in Paris. He was 62…
