Be Yourself nobody can do it better!

The goal of this series is certainly not to divide ourselves, but contrary have us all thinking as to the why, the how and whatsoever explaining the obvious lack of impact of our scene, despite the existence of undeniable talents, and countless initiatives hailing from all over the world geared towards its recognition…

Be yourself! So amazing at the end of the day, although bein’ what makes it so omnipresent and powerful, as to how music can be linked to so many things in life, such as feelings (from passion to love, but also repulsion if not hate) and images (being the basis of its ability to suggest). Not to mention writing. And when I’m talkin’ about the latter, I mean the way we come to learn how to write. We first would discover it typographically speakin’, then reproduce it and appropriate it for ourselves. This is the typical schema of the so called experience – differently said: the background – which we get in almost every aspect of life, but at least do we need someone who’ll get us into it. This might be a teacher, some older peeps, a mentor, a spiritual guide or a prescriber. Name it whoever you want… In other words, what I’d be tempted to call A reference. Someone who we tend to recognize ourselves in without necessarily knowing the exact reasons, I should say, except the fact that he or she would be feeding our appetite if not generating it. Those peeps we refer to have no doubt a special dimension for each of us, because of that specific link we feel like having with them. Luckily enough, I met many at an early age, so that I guess my internal construction’s been made easier, meanwhile I would be given a method…

On most cases, what we had to do was to simply take notice of the credits (like on the record sleeves) at this early time, with everyone around lookin’ like havin’ understood the absolute necessity of being identifiable as opposed to nowadays seeing us mainly surrounded by a magma of sound/look/think/reactalike stuff. From the producers to the musicians, from the record companies which truly acted like labels to the club owners/promoters who would do everything to make their spaces unique. Not to mention the radio stations which would base their reputations and subsequently their audiences on real characters at the time. Was it because we all sort of were in a discovering process back then? Could it be that my interrogations of the likes are nothing else but generational at the end of the day? This, I couldn’t really say, but if there’s anything to be taken for sure from that period, it’s the existence, if not evidence of a diversity which, ironically, was way more around than today despite the existence of far more performing reputedly ways of communication.

So many people would get their names in the History while being simply left the opportunity to be themselves as opposed to the countless pre-marketed concepts currently competing for leadership in the charts nowadays! And the result aptly speakin’ for itself, as demonstrated by the enormous difference of record sales from a period to another; the first reason leading us back to the undeniable existence of identity back in the daze. I mean that once again everything would be made to have us a clear idea of what we were fronted.  Motown was Motown, Salsoul was Salsoul, Prelude was Prelude. And that applied to almost everything around, from the Paradise Garage to the Palace in Paris, but also most of those places which remained anonymous on a worldwide scale with many of the 70’s DJ’s being real die hard music lovers as opposed to radio Top 30 followers. And I guess the same ought to be said presswise with reviewers acting like prescribers as opposed to trend/buzz reporters, as well as on radio stations with real broadcasters as opposed to pre-programmed driven jocks. This, no doubt, being also for much in the big differences between these distinctive periods…
