Most Wanted! Clyde Alexander & Sanction – Got To Get Your Love (Heavenly Star Records)
Heavenly Star is one of those labels run by Peter Brown, synonymous with some of the most sought after gems in the history of Disco. ‘Got To Get Your Love’ making no exception.
Released back in 1980, it starred a then young performer only aged 15 by the likes of Clyde Alexander along with musician, songwriter and arranger Gary Davis and his group (Sanction). A man who also happened to release it on his own label, although it’s a different version.
A quick check at Google suffices to notice the lack of info/coverage about Clyde Alexander. Mind you, this brings us back in the Disco days and therefore more than 35 years ago. And this brings us to its underground / obscure side on top of it.
Thankfully enough, we managed to have a chat with Gary Davis back in the day. Thereafter what he said…
“Well, first I was not working with Peter Brown, unlike Patrick Adams, but for him. Both are older. I was 25, meanwhile Peter & Patrick were in their late 30’s. I only did about a year’s worth of work for Peter, before I began Chocolate Star in New Jersey. Also at that time I was a composer/arranger and keyboard/piano player. I was not Peter’s artist, nor Clyde (Alexander) who was mine.
Clyde was about 15 when we did ‘Got To Get Your Love’. His vocals on it are not even turned up like I had planned for them to be. Artists always get more credit as compared to writers or producers. I was the little guy in the background, getting the pieces together.
Sanction was my band. I had put it together to do sessions for Peter who did not really have a studio band.”
Kenny Dope remixed the track and released it on his Kay-Dee Records label back in 2005.
Another cut by the likes of Clyde Alexander has seen the light 2 years after. Titled ‘Cruzin”, it’s available from the ‘Chocolate Star EP II’ compilation on Gary Davis‘s Chocolate Star label.
