Creative Source – You Can’t Hide Love

Classics: Creative Source – You Can’t Hide Love (Sussex)

Strange as to how time doesn’t seem havin’ effect on certain pieces of music. More than 40 years have gone – can you believe it? – since the release of the magnetic ‘You Can’t Hide Love’. A cut which marked the debut of Californian Soul band Creative Source, with writing work courtesy of Skip Scarborough. And what a delicious goodie they managed to deliver at the end…

In a Soul/Jazz Quiet Storm mood over a smooth funk bass driven rhythm pattern, ‘You Can’t Hide Love’ has something of a cinematic travel. With subtle top class arrangements under the direction of Paul Riser and production work by the likes of Mike Stokes.
Earth, Wind & Fire gave it their own rendition 2 years later back in 1975, although they titled it ‘Can’t Hide Love’. Meanwhile Masters At Work turned the latter into a firing upbeat on their remix in 2002. Raheem DeVaughn sampling it back 3 years later on the memorable ‘Guess Who Loves You More’.

When knocking at the door, you can’t hide love. Can you???

Overview
A Soul quintet, Creative Source saw the light back in the early 80’s. From the reunion of Barbara Lewis (The Elgins), Donald Lee Wyatt (keyboards), Steve Flanagan, Barbara Berryman and Celeste Rose. They went straight into recognition with the Mike Stokes produced ‘You Can’t Hide Love’, their debut-single from their 1973 album. A cut which Earth, Wind & Fire eventually covered 2 years after. But they would score their biggest success with their firing Disco cover version of Bill Withers‘s ‘Who Is He & What Is He To You’.

Creative Source released 3 other albums until 1976. Unable to capitalize on their early successes, they soon after disappeared from the radar.
