David Harness – Holy Spirit (Extended Mix)

Tennerz: David Harness – Holy Spirit (Extended Mix) (Quantize Recordings)

‘Holy Spirit’ hardly makes mystery as to where its origins are to be found. Meanwhile confirming the aptitude of House Music to embrace so many different vibes. Just like Disco did at its time as a matter of fact…

And here we go, speakin’ of Gospel where so many current singers built up their foundations. From Michelle Weeks, Dawn Tallman and the late Sabrynaah Pope. In other words, the ones remembered as Voices with the firing ‘Can U See The Light’. And how not to think of Kenny Bobien‘s version cover version of Kirk Franklin‘s ‘Why We Sing’?

Most likely due to set a date in history, David Harness resurrects another blast from the past by the likes of ‘Holy Spirit’. And, in the meantime, pays a brilliant tribute to its author – Edwin Hawkins – who sadly passed last January.

Not an American citizen myself, I’m beggin’ you in advance to forgive what may appear thereafter as a lack of precision. This while saying I found the first trace of the recording of ‘Holy Spirit’ back in 1982. As a part of the ‘Edwin Hawkins Live With The Oakland Symphony Orchestra Volume II’ album on Myrrh Records. With pianist, choir master, composer and arranger Edwin Hawkins in the driver’s seat. His brother Daniel, on piano and The Love Center Choir on backing vocals. The whole on a smooth jazzy tip.

I suppose one can aptly say David Harness‘ rendition is a real tour de force. Turning it a bumpin’ bass-driven uplifting gem. Meanwhile ensuring to keep its emphasis and the original richness of its arrangements alive.

Holy sh**! That’s really it…

Edwin Hawkins sadly died of pancreatic cancer on Jan. 15, 2018, in Pleasanton, CA, at the age of 74.

He nowadays stands as a driving force within the dance community. With influences varying from Barry White to Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. But also Quincy Jones, the Jackson Five and Stevie Wonder. This in addition to Parliament, Funkadelic, the Isley Brothers and First Choice. Recognizing his talent, Twisted America quickly signed him to produce his first single, ‘Get It Together’. This as a part of their ‘A Little Bit of the Old, A Lot Of The New’ compilation.

In September 2000, David launched DHJ Productions. Soon after establishing himself as an in-demand producer and remixer. With the impressive list of those he’s worked with speakin’ from itself. From Mary J. Blige to Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin and Alicia Keys. But also Ann Nesby and Anané. Then, more recently, Dawn Williams (‘In My Head’ along with Lou Gorbea) to name a few.
