Donna Summer – Mac Arthur Park Suite

Classics: Donna Summer – Mac Arthur Park Suite (Casablanca Records)

And how about bringin’ you on some fascinating travelling?!? This being pretty much what we have here. With the action occuring at Mac Arthur Park, although the people at Casablanca Records should have written MacArthur Park. Itself a location dating back to the late XIXth Century in the Westlake neighborhood of Los Angeles, CA. Hence its former name at the time (Westlake Park). This before being renamed after General Douglas MacArthur in the early 40’s.
As for the cast, we have Jimmy Webb and Richard Harris who wrote it back in 1967. With the latter releasing it the year after on Dunhill Records. Then Donna Summer givin’ it a cover version ten years after with producer Giorgo Moroder.

Houston, MA-born Donna Summer first started as the lead singer of Psychedelic Rock band Crow before joinin’ a touring version of musical ‘Hair’.

Moving to Europe where she had various jobs as a singer and acress, Summer came to meet Munich-based back then producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Belotte. With the latter getting her to the top in the then emerging Disco scene. Almost by accident, admitted Giorgio Moroder in an interview we had back in the first half of the 2000’s. This while recording the memorable ‘Love To Love You Baby’. The first of an impressive list of classics including ‘I Feel Love’, ‘Hot Stuff’ and ‘Bad Girls’. But also ‘No More tears (Enough Is Enough’) along with Barbra Streisand and ‘On The Radio’ among others. The Jimmy Webb and Richard Harris 1967 penned ‘Mac Arthur Park’ completing the list. As enhanced by the recording of the 18-minute musical medley ‘Mac Arthur Park Suite’, conceived as so to say a Disco opus in various acts…

Tracy Hamlin following Donna Summer with her own rendition of ‘Mac Arthur Park’ back in 2015. This with producers DJ Spen and Thommy Davis.

What’s the value of your vinyl record?

Diagnosed with a lung cancer, Donna Summer sadly passed on May 17, 2012, at her home in Naples, FL, aged 63.
