Fela Kuti VS Masters At Work – Expensive Shit

Fela Anikulapo Kuti & Africa 70 – Expensive Shit (Soundworkshop Records)
Taken from his 1975 released album of the name. “The title of the album refers to an incident in which the Nigerian police tried to arrest him by planting a joint on him. Kuti managed to eat the joint, prompting police to bring him into custody and wait for him to produce the excrement . According to legend he managed to use another inmates’s feces and was eventually released” (Wikipedia).
More of a two tracker though (as the man used to record long pieces of music) backed with the no less classic ‘Water Get No Enemy’). The Afrobeat, born from the superposition of Fela‘s ultra conscious lyrics over Tony Allen‘s unique drum patterns, at one of its absolute peaks!

Louie Vega & Kenny Dope on a lesser reknown facet of their culture, paying nevertheless a brilliant tribute to the Black President two years after his death back in 1999, alongside singer/dancer WUNMI. An appetizer to a certain extend of the Nuyorican Soul II album concept meant to display their ancestral African influences. A follow up which never saw the light though, most likely because of the astronomical costs to promote its predecessor…
