Tennerz: Gizelle Smith – Dust (Dimitri From Paris Vs. Cotonete Discomix)(Jalapeño Records)
I guess what I love about dealing with music is the fact that it’s synonymous with embracing so many different things. Be they purely sensorial which comes without to say. But also historical if not social, political or ethnical at times. Meanwhile most oftenly reflecting the times we’re living. Thus makin’ of the job of a reviewer the one of an archeologist to a certain extend.
Call this ‘Dust’ or traces, music as a language is just like constantly reinventing itself as a matter of fact. Something one could pretty much feel when givin’ a listen to Gizelle Smith‘s ‘Dust’ as remixed by Dimitri from Paris and Cotonete.
As a result ‘Dust’ has this modern Disco feel one can find for instance on Glenn Underground‘s ‘In With The New’. Meanwhile feels kinda hard to not see a parental link with The LTG Exchange‘s classic ‘Waterbed’. Differently said, ‘Dust’ most likely sounds the way Disco Jazz/Funk probably would nowadays. Makin’ of it a potential evergreen classic in the genre. With your feedback pretty much welcome as usual…

Gizelle Smith grew up in a multi-cultural environment in Manchester, UK. With her mom hailing from the Seychelles islands and her dad remembered for his contributions as a guitarist along with the Four Tops during the 70’s. Composing for theatrical companies, she eventually played trumpet in local bands when not working as a singing teacher…
Smith delivered her first single back in 2008. Meanwhile teamin’ up with Hamburg-based group The Mighty Mocambos on ‘Working Woman’. It first saw the light on Finnish label Old Capital. With Kenny Dope licensing it a few months after on his Kay-Dee Records label with a couple of remixes. Gizelle Smith & The Mighty Mocambos‘ eponymous debut-album appearing during that same year (2009). With this leading them to extensively tour during the following months.
Strangely enough, the early 2010 happened to more or less be synonymous with a break for the singer. Thus remaining away from the spotlights between 2012 and the end of 2017 with the release of (‘Sweet Memories / S.T.A.Y.’). A 7 inch which marked her return. But this time as a solo artist on Jalapeño Records with a debut-album – ‘Ruthless Day’ – in the pipeline. The latter seeing the light back on Mar. 30, 2018 along with a new single. ‘Dust’ – that’s its title – comin’ up with remixes courtesy of Dimitri From Paris together with French Jazz/Funk collective Cotonete.
