Single Of The Week: Greg Blackman – Never Trust Another Man Again (Ashley Beedle’s North St Jazz Stripped Back Remix) (Ramrock Records)
I wish I would find the words to give a proper description to the feelings which are mine when listening to Greg Blackman‘s ‘Never Trust Another Man’. And I kindly invite you to share this with yours once you’ve done the same as myself.
Here we have an absolute diamond, showcasing a performance comin’ straight from the deeper sides of the heart and soul. Reachin’ peaks like one’s hardly ever heard before. Produced by Sofa King, ‘Never Trust Another Man’ made quite a sensation on its original version. With Ashley Beedle bringin’ it to further heights on its North St Jazz Stripped Back Remix. Soundin’ like some unplugged version along with a piano part that creates an atmosphere bringin’ back to the souvenir of Erik Satie‘s play.
‘Never Trust Another Man Again…’ Except Blackman and Beedle at least!

UK Soul singer Greg Blackman has made himself quite a reputation. Not only for his uniquely versatile voice. But also his passionate approach to his subject matter. Whether that be life, love, social upheaval or just having fun. Not to mention his unique hooks. As many ingredients that saw him collaborating with countless luminaries. From DJ Vadim to Daz-I-Kue, Renegades Of Jazz and Nightmares On Wax to name a few.
His songs eventually found their way on the likes of MTV and featured on the NME website. Played on the Craig Charles Funk & Soul show on BBC6 and reviewed in Blues & Soul Magazine.
The first traces of him bring us back to Spring 2013. Back then, he shared the duties with Mooqee and Herbgrinder on ‘Rain’. A jam bringing us to Jungle territories after a downtempo intro somehow reminding of The Brothers Johnson‘s classic ‘Strawberry Letter 23″. He then would join Steve Bird aka Mr Bird on his ‘Low-Fi Classics’ album the year after for BBE. Remember the twisting Bluesy ‘Save Me’. Soon after givin’ a brilliant demonstration of his obvious versatility on the dark Housey ‘Aquarius’ along with Steve Legget. Or jammin’ along with Hidden Jazz Quartet on the laidback ‘Tap On The Backdoor’.
With more and more material from his extensive backlog due to see the light and new gems being cooked in his Soul Kitchen all the time, it looks like Greg Blackman is to find a place among his contemporaries as one of the UK’s finest Blue Eyed Soul voices. And if not already convinced, the Ashley Beedle‘s North St Jazz Stripped Back Remix of ‘Never Trust Another Man’ should pretty much clear all your doubts.
