Gwen Guthrie – Ain't Nothing Goin' On But The Rent (Polydor)

Although she scored only a handful of successes on her own, Gwen Guthrie has an impressive so to say backstage repertoire. As a songwriter, she’s responsible alongside Patrick Grant for the much sought after ‘Supernatural Thing’ for Ben E. King among others. Meanwhile, as a backing singer, she has collaborated with big cats from Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway (‘Back Together Again’) to Mongo Santamaria (‘Watermelon Man’), Stevie Wonder, Madonna and Aretha Franklin, to name but a few…
She started makin’ herself a name with producers Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare (ie ‘Peek-A-Boo’, ‘It Should Have Been You’), and soon was dubbed “The First Lady of the Paradise Garage”, on the heels of notorious performances she gave there.
She would get her first major success in 1986 with ‘Ain’t Nothing Going On But the Rent’ co-produced by David Pic Conley of the Surface fame, as remixed by The PG resident DJ Larry Levan… A song, the lyrics of which have received some bad critics for their seen as materialistic theme, however Guthrie‘s intend was different.
