Herbie Mann – Memphis Underground (Atlantic)

Herbie Mann is a quintessential figure in the history of the contemporary groove. He embraced Latin Jazz, Reggae and Disco, among others, eventually scoring his biggest succes with his cover version of Barrabas‘s ‘Hi Jack’ but also of Celi Bee‘s Superman’, prior giving birth to the Jazz/Funk classic ‘Etagui’ along with Disco Don Patrick Adams.
The 1969 released ‘Memphis Underground’ from the album of the name stands as his signature cut, with production work by the likes of Tom Dowd, featuring the instantly recognizable Roy Ayers on vibraphone and stellar rocky guitar parts.
