Idris Muhammad – Could Heaven Ever Be Like This

Most Wanted! Idris Muhammad – Could Heaven Ever Be Like This (Kudu Records)

Here we go, straight into another dimension. Something, as a matter of fact, one can feel from the very first note…
This is therefore Disco! Although with that special feel that only those coming from the Jazz territories could bring. Artists like Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers or Lenny White to name but a few…

Here we dive into some blend of Soul, Jazz and Funk vibes which, melted with Rock, gave it this infectious psychedelic feel. Taken from the 1977 ‘Turn This Mutha Out’ album, on Creed Taylor‘s CTI sister label Kudu Records. With Dave Matthews, remembered for his contribution as an arranger alongside James Brown, in charge of the production.

‘Could Heaven Ever Be Like This’? Most likely for those in search for the Holy Grail!

Overview
New Orleans, LA-born Leo Morris‘s career started back in 1956 when, at the age of 16, he played drums on Fat Domino‘s hit ‘Blueberry Hill’.
The list of those he collaborated with is quite illustrative in regards to his versatility. From Grover Washington, Jr. to Pharoah Sanders, Curtis Mayfield and George Benson among many others.
Like many musicians of his generation, his undeniable sense of the groove led him to flirt with Disco vibes back in the day. Such as on this album, but also the following ones he released on Fantasy. Beginning with ‘Make It Count’ as opened by the vibrant ‘For Your Love’

Muhammad sadly died in Fort Lauderdale, FL on Jul. 29, 2014, aged 74, with reports back then about some possible kidney failure…
