First Listen! Jay Nemor – Everyday (hWah Stellar Disco Mix) (Vier Deep Digital)
Norwegian label Vier Deep Digital brilliantly give a brilliant display as to what they are into on this first release courtesy of Jay Nemor. A cut delivered with remixes by the likes of in-demand Opolopo. But also Addvibe and promising new comer Håvard Kvangarsnes aka hWah.
Here we have an interesting range of vibes blending elements of Soul, Jazz, Disco, Funk and Afro. With the whole twisted in a very modernistic way. American baritone singer Jay Nemor has that something of Gil Scott-Heron. That something to which hWah adds a special effect on his Electro blowing synth/bass driven stellar mix enlightened by an infectious sax part.
Based in Gothenburg, Sweden, Jay Nemor has come a long way. A vocalist, songwriter, composer and producer, he also happens to play instruments such as the saxophone and keyboards. He had his musical start at the age of 9 on the electric bass in his hometown of Houston, TX. Then 2 years after, he played the alto saxophone in various stage and concert bands for the local high school.
Some of his greatest influences include Earth, Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye and Isaac Hayes. But also Donny Hathaway, Curtis Mayfield and Gil Scott-Heron which shouldn’t come as a surprise.
A career in basketball led him to Iceland. There, he rediscovered his passion for music while performing in a tribute to the Soul of Motown in 2003. He remembers sitting in a club in downtown Reykjavik with some friends while listening to old soul and R&B. One friend of his asked then: “Why don´t they make music like this anymore?” At the mention of this the wheels in his mind began to turn. This is how he realized what he wanted to do. In other words, do his best to rehabilitate the essence of this old school sound with a modern flavor.
He borrowed a Casio keyboard. Then he began learning chords and how to arrange them and eventually came up with a few tunes. In the fall of 2004, he and fellow Motown performer, Kenya, teamed up to form Kenya Nemor (later known as Kenya & Nemor).
Over the next several years, Jay Nemor has worked as a session musician, producer and songwriter with various artists ranging from Hip-Hop, R&B, soul, House, Jazz, Alternative and World Music.
After setting the foundation for a career in Iceland, he made the move to Oslo, Norway in an attempt to connect the work with a larger mass of people. Since moving to Oslo he has also become involved in the theater as a musician and narrator. After several years he again relocated to Gothenburg, Sweden. The future looks bright for Jay Nemor and Scandinavia to this point has proven to be a suitable location to grow.
Life seems to be like an everyday discovery process…
