Jay Nemor – Music Suite Soul (Afro Lounge Edit)

First Listen: Jay Nemor – Music Suite Soul (Sound Science Capital Soul Afro Lounge Edit) (Cyberjamz)

I just got stuck on this when coming to listen to this Edit of ‘Music Suite Soul’ the very first time. Not that I disliked its original version released a few month before, on a lascivious Soul groove. But WDC-based DJ/producer Soundscience added so much to it. Thus definitely getting it to the next level. Meanwhile recreating some loungey jazzy atmospheric environment over a smooth funky bass-driven 4X4 beat. Somehow reminding of Alton Miller‘s approach. And, by that, leaving more space to Nemor‘s intonations themselves at times bringing back to the souvenir of Cunnie Williams. If not Gil Scott-Heron who, not coincidentally, stands among his references…

‘Music Suite Soul’… That’s pretty much what we have. With everything to make of it a luxury one although with sobriety. In other words, what we call the class!

Overview
Based in Gothenburg, Sweden, Jay Nemor has come a long way. A vocalist, songwriter, composer and producer, he also happens to play instruments such as the saxophone and keyboards. He had his musical start at the age of 9 on the electric bass in his then hometown of Houston, TX. Then 2 years after, he played the alto saxophone in various stage and concert bands for the local high school.

Some of his greatest influences include Earth, Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye and Isaac Hayes. But also Donny Hathaway, Curtis Mayfield and Gil Scott-Heron which shouldn’t come as a surprise.

A career in basketball led him to Iceland. There, he rediscovered his passion for music while performing in a tribute to the Soul of Motown in 2003. He remembers sitting in a club in downtown Reykjavik with some friends while listening to old soul and R&B. One friend of his asked then: “Why don´t they make music like this anymore?” At the mention of this the wheels in his mind began to turn. This is how he realized what he wanted to do. In other words, do his best to rehabilitate the essence of this old school sound with a modern flavor.

He borrowed a Casio keyboard. Then he began learning chords and how to arrange them and eventually came up with a few tunes. In the fall of 2004, he and fellow Motown performer, Kenya, teamed up to form Kenya Nemor (later known as Kenya & Nemor).

Over the next several years, Jay Nemor has worked as a session musician, producer and songwriter with various artists ranging from Hip-Hop, R&B, soul, House, Jazz, Alternative and World Music.

After setting the foundation for a career in Iceland, he made the move to Oslo, Norway in an attempt to connect the work with a larger mass of people. And when moving to Oslo he has also become involved in the theater as a musician and narrator. After several years, he again relocated to Gothenburg, Sweden.

The future looks bright for Jay Nemor and Scandinavia to this point has proven to be a suitable location to grow. With the man standing on a bunch of exquisite jewels. From ‘Smile’ that saw him joining forces with De Fantastiske To back in 2014 (remember their ‘Folk Og Ferie’?). To ‘Music Soul Suite’ and its blowing Edit courtesy of Sound Science. But also the soothing ‘Everyday’ with remixing work by the likes of hWah. Not to mention the magnetic ‘Motherland’ which he recorded as a part of Octupuz‘s 2016 ‘My Journey’ album. This in addition to the deep’n’jazzy ‘Curious’ along with Addvibe back in 2017. With ‘Everyday’ comin’ up with extra reworks, and more precisely a stellar one by the likes of Egil Reistadbakk aka Reggie Got Beats by the middle of January 2019.

Life just seems to be like an everyday discovery process…
