Jesse Gould – Out Of Work (P&P Records)

Most Wanted! Jesse Gould – Out Of Work (P&P Records)

From the vaults of Patrick Adams‘s P&P Records label. One of those units synonymous with the Holy Grail for the amateurs of Disco! And therefore the subject of regular heavy battles between bidders on eBay back in the day!

Hard to not get instantly caught up by this string led syncopated jam filled with Funk vibes. Its social content, quite exceptional in the Disco scene, adding to its interest. ‘Out Of Work (need a job)’… And somehow reminding of Golden Flamingo Orchestra‘s ‘The Guardian Angel Is Watching Over Us’. With big ups to Billy Nichols who produced it. An experience which the latter and Gould would repeat 4 years after on the equally sought after ‘That’s Hot’.

Overview
Billy Nichols was born in 1940 in Carrollton, MS. He learnt playing guitar by his own self, most likely getting inspiration from his dad who was playing Blues during his spare time.
Moving to Detroit, MI at the age of 24, he got himself a job at Motown. He first played with Martha & The Vandellas, then acted as a musical director for Marvin Gaye in 1965. The following years seeing him alternating his activities between touring and songwriting.

He would reach his peak when writing and producing ‘Do It (Til You’re Satisfied)’ and ‘Shout (Shout It Out)’ for B.T. Express. He’s also responsible for Jesse Gould‘s ‘Out Of Work’ on P&P Records. Not to mention ‘That’s Hot’ for the then called Jessie G.
Signed as an artist on West End Records, he also produced ‘The Adventures Of Super Rhymes’ and ‘Rhythm Rap Rock’ respectively for Jimmy Spicer and Count Coolout.
