This Beat Is Mine! (*) Jesse Johnson – Every Shade Of Love (Keith Cohen Remix) (A&M)
To me, Johnson, who was a member of The Time along with Prince at a period, Jam & Lewis or Morris Day, simply never got the recognition he deserved.
This groove, although dating from than 30 years ago now, hasn’t lost its original freshness. And I just love the way this man sings. But also the lyrics of this song. Not to mention its cool jazzy feel over a beat somehow taking its influences from Go-Go Music.
‘Every Shade of Love’ has definitely something of Levert‘s ‘Casanova’. And in the meantime, it still has that Minneapolis sound feel. That thing one can most likely find on Prince‘s ‘Sign O’ The Times’ for instance. Don’t you think?
Anyway, I’d like to thank you for keeping these vibes alive in your columns.

Once in a week (on Wednesdays), IDMW is left with you at the command!
For this to happen, nothing’s more easy… What you’ve just got to do is drop us a line while using our contact form and let us know about your favorite piece of music (*), along with a review explaining what it suggests you and why people should dig it. And the best of it will be given a publication with your credit the week after.
With warm thanks to Brixton-based correspondent, Jamie Lawson, for this week’s suggestion…
Gladly welcoming yours to be published next Wednesday. On your marks!
