Joe Cocker – Ruby Lee (Island)

Classics: Joe Cocker – Ruby Lee (Island)

At first sight, some of you might pretty well wonder what a Rocker has to do on these shores. Although this is not any Rocker we’re mentioning here but the one and only Joe Cocker. A man whose gritty voice has allowed to embrace so many different vibes. Plus, don’t forget these shores are the ones of Indamixworldwide where everything may find some space. As long as it’s quality material and groovy. With this being pretty much the case regarding ‘Ruby Lee’.

As a matter of fact, most of you would find quite natural to see a mention of Grace Jones‘ ‘Libertango’ here on IDMW. A quick look at the names of those who put it together the year before, and you realize some of them are behind ‘Ruby Lee’. Beginning with Robbie Shakespeare on bass and Sly Dunbar on drums. Not to mention Wally Badarou on keyboards along with label CEO Chris Blackwell in charge of the production. The latter pretty much contributing givin’ an electronic Rasta feel to this Bill Withers‘s classic.

‘Ruby Lee’, but also ‘Seven Days’ and his cover version of Steve Winwood‘s ‘Talking Back To The Night’… As many highlights which have contributed makin’ of the 1982 released ‘Sheffield Steel’ album, one of Joe Cocker‘s most exciting efforts.

What’s the value of your vinyl record?
