Joe Cocker – Talking Back To The Night (Island)

Lost but not least! Joe Cocker – Talking Back To The Night (Island)

One of the biggest charms of music would probably be its intrinsic versatility. This along with the infinite possibilities it offers in terms of interpretation. With chances being great that two people, in front of the same instruments, won’t give it the same rendition. In other words, music is just not a rocket science. Like say programming a website where typing a coma as opposed to a dot can ruin the whole at the end. This being how music provides us with originals on one hand and cover versions, on the other. Ie ‘Talking Back To The Night’.

Strangely enough, ‘Talking Back To The Night’ never saw the light as a single. And this despite its undeniable appeal. Be it as the title track to Steve Winwood‘s 1982 album of the likes. As its Reggaeish cover version by the likes of Joe Cocker a few weeks later. This along with label CEO Chris Blackwell in charge of the production. But also Sly Dunbar on drums and Robbie Shakespeare on bass. Not to mention Wally Badarou on keyboards givin’ an infectious electronic Rasta feel.

As a result, ‘Talking Back To The Night’ stands among the highlights of Joe Cocker‘s ‘Sheffield Steel’ album. This with ‘Ruby Lee’ and ‘Seven Days’
