Kenny Bobien – Rise Above The Storm (MAW Records)

Classics: Kenny Bobien – Rise Above The Storm (MAW Records)

Hard to believe almost 20 years have gone since the release of ‘Rise Above The Storm’! To those of you who’ve been its contemporaries, it might look like this was yesterday. Meanwhile for the others, this might date from like back in the Middle Age. Even though it feels like time hasn’t had any effect on it.

‘Rise Above The Storm’ stands as a timeless joint, with its title proudly speakin’ for itself. Mind you, we’re speaking of positive vibes. Kenny Bobien delivering a positive message that can apply to each of you, regardless our respective situations. He empowers it with his instantly identifiable style, eventually scatting too. Labels heads Louie Vega and Kenny Dope aka Masters At Work coming up with minimalistic although polished arrangements over a rumblin’ bassline.

Not to mention his cover version of ‘Why We Sing’ with post-production work by the likes of Big Moses and Johnny Dangerous. Or his memorable duet with Stephanie Cooke on ‘Love’s Been Right Here’. This in addition to ‘Old Landmark’ and ‘Baptize Me’ along with The Djoon Experience.

His latest delivery – ‘Love Is On The Way’ – along with producer Jose Burgos standing as another staple to be added to his already impressive list. With aditional thanks to Josh Milan whose remixing work puts it into another dimension…
