Kenny Thomas – Baby It’s You (Remix)

Classics: Kenny Thomas – Baby It’s You (Eric Kupper Classics Mix) (Soul Fi)

Judging by his CV (he’s been a boxing fighter before working as a technician for BT), Kenny Thomas was probably not the first name to come off the hat when thinking of a singer. He made his thing though back in 1991. Comin’ up with a cover version of The Gap Band‘s classic ‘Outstanding’. A cut soon after followed by the seminal ‘Thinking About Your Love’. Meanwhile displaying a unique vocal talent.

From then, he would go thru various periods of silence, making proof of the same magnetism each time he managed to come back. Such as on the uplifting and joyful ‘Baby It’s You’. A jam beautifully remixed by Eric Kupper back in 2012 which we heavily championed back then on our Facebook page.

‘Baby It’s You’ is most likely one of both Thomas‘ most catchy gems and Kupper‘s best remixes ever…

Overview
Who could ever predict the one who’d been a boxer then a BT techician would ever become a singer?!? And not any singer. But a First League performer who managed to get a bunch of gems in the charts.

A native of Islington, London, Kenny Thomas attended the Cardinal Pole Roman Catholic School in Hackney. With thanks to a unique voicing, he went straight under the spotlights with his cover version of the Gap Band‘s classic ‘Outstanding’ back in 1991. From then, Thomas would get another three single in the charts. Beginning with ‘Thinking About Your Love’, his biggest classic ever. Then ‘Best Of You’ and ‘Tender Love’. In other words, enough to have his debut-album – ‘Voices’ – peakin’ at #3 in the UK Albums Chart. And get him nominated for an award in two categories at the Brit Awards the year after.

His follow-up – ‘Wait For Me’- came to light in 1993, including contributions from Nu Colours and the Young Disciples. With its lead single – ‘Trippin’ On Your Love’ – comin’ up at #17 position in the UK Singles Chart. Meanwhile, another single, ‘When I Think Of You’, saw light back in 1995 as a teaser to his third album which remained unreleased due to a split with his record label.

Thomas went off the radars for about 10 years. Reducing his activities to a bunch of underground collabs before resurfacing with a brand new album – ‘Crazy World’ – on Curb Records back in 2006. A Blue-Eyed Soul talent like say Mario Biondi, he opened his scope to extra vibes such as House. Eventually teamin’ up with Phil Hooton on ‘Sunshine Girl’. But also Eric Kupper on ‘Baby It’s You’ back in 2012. And he kept on covering classics in the meantime. From Gwen McCrae‘s ‘Keep The Fire Burning’ to The System‘s ‘You Are In My System’. Not to mention joinin’ forces with up and coming bands such as Cool Million (‘Without Your Love’) and The Doggett Brothers (‘You Make Me Feel’). With his latest gem to date – ‘Your Love’ – receiving the remixing treament of Simon Grey, Opolopo and Nigel Lowis.
