Level 42 – Starchild (Long Version)

Classics: Level 42 – Starchild (Polydor)

“When I was an infant in my mothers arms, I would watch the starlight in her face. Cause I was reaching out to understand the cosmic charm. I am just a starchild born in space…” Could these lyrics ever be related to what the protagonists of the band were feeling when they were kids?!? Who knows apart from them at the end?

Born in the Isle of Wight, Mark King moved to London at the age of 19. There, he gave birth to Level 42 along with Phil Gould (drums), his brother, Boom (guitar) and Mike Lindup (keyboards). Back then, he would eventually turn himself from a drummer into one of the best bass guitarists in the world. Getting influences from his elders, such as Larry Graham, Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller. Meanwhile bringing the 70’s slap style to a wider audience…

From then, Level 42 would develop an instantly recognizable style. This resulting in classics such as ‘Lessons In Love’, ‘Something About You’ and ‘The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up)’ among others.
The Wally Badarou co-written ‘Starchild’, comin’ from their eponymous debut-album back in 1981, being their very first cut to enter the Club Play Singles. But also one of the best illustrations ever of the high-caliber musicianship of the band.
