Music, media, environment… Life is what you make it!

“Life is what you make it. Always has been, always will be…” (Eleanor Roosevelt)

Be yourself! So amazing at the end of the day, although bein’ what makes it so omnipresent and powerful, as to how we can link music to so many things in life. Things such as feelings (from passion to love, but also repulsion if not hate). Then images (being the basis of its ability to suggest). Not to mention writing. And when I’m talkin’ about the latter, I mean the way we come to learn how to write…

We first would discover it typographically speakin’, then reproduce it and appropriate it for ourselves. This is the typical schema of the so called experience. Or, in other words, the background that we get in almost every aspects of life. But at least do we need someone who’ll get us into it. This might be a teacher, some older peeps, a mentor, a spiritual guide or a prescriber. Name it whoever you want… Differently said, what I’d be tempted to call A reference. Someone whom we tend to recognize ourselves in without necessarily knowing the exact reasons, I should say. This except the fact that he or she would be feeding our appetite if not generating it.

Those peeps we refer to have no doubt a special dimension for each of us. Because of that specific link we feel like having with them. Luckily enough, I met many at an early age. So that I guess my internal construction’s been made easier, meanwhile I would be given a method…

On most cases, what we had to do was to simply take notice of the credits (like on the record sleeves) at this early time. With everyone around lookin’ like havin’ understood the absolute necessity of being identifiable. This in comparison with nowadays seeing us like wandering in a magma of sound/look/think/reactalike stuff. From the producers to the musicians. But also the record companies which truly acted like labels. Then the club owners/promoters who would do everything to make their spaces unique. Not to mention the radio stations which would base their reputations and subsequently their audiences on real characters at the time.

Was it because we all sort of were in a discovering process back then? Could it be that my interrogations are nothing else but generational at the end? That, I couldn’t really say. But if there’s anything I may recall for sure from that period, it’s the existence, if not evidence of a diversity. A vartiety which, like is or not, was way more around than today. And this despite the existence of far more performing reputedly ways of communication by the time speakin’. No matter what, life is what you make it at the end. And when I’m sayin’ you, I mean all of us with no exception as a matter of fact.

So many people would get their names in the History while simply benefitting from the opportunity to be themselves. This in comparison with nowadays’ countless pre-marketed concepts currently competing for leadership in the charts! With the result aptly speakin’ for itself judging by the enormous difference of record sales from a period to another. The first reason leading us back to the undeniable existence of identity back in the day. I mean that once again everything would be made to have us a clear idea of what we were fronted.

Motown was Motown, Salsoul was Salsoul and Prelude was Prelude. And that applied to almost everything around. From the Paradise Garage to the Palace in Paris. But also most of those places which remained anonymous on a worldwide scale with many of the 70’s DJ’s being real die hard music lovers as opposed to radio Top 30 followers. And I guess we coud say the same about the press with reviewers acting like prescribers as opposed to trend/buzz reporters. As well as about the radio stations with real broadcasters as opposed to pre-programmed driven jocks. This, no doubt, being also for much in the big differences between these distinctive periods. Besides, and whatever you all might say, life is what you make it…
