Manu Dibango – Big Blow (Decca)

This Beat Is Mine! (*) Manu Dibango – Big Blow (Fiesta Records)

‘Big Blow’ is certainly how we could both qualify Manu Dibango and his music.
Although strongly associated to ‘Soul Makossa’ which saw the day soon after this jam, the man’s contribution to the contemporary music is just unvaluable. Linking Jazz and Funk to traditional African music. And therefore appearing as quintessential in history as the late Fela Kuti.

Hard to believe this jam is already close to 40. Not even talking about his creator, on his way to release a new album and travelling worldwide at the age of 81! I guess we’ll never say how Africa owes so much to this man on the recognition of its musicians since.

‘Big Blow’! That’s just what what it is…

Once in a week (on Wednesdays), we leave you at the command of IDMW
For this to happen, nothing’s more easy… What you’ve just got to do is drop us a line while using our contact form and let us know about your favorite piece of music (*), along with a review explaining what it suggests you and why people should dig it. And the best of it will be given a publication with your credit the week after.

With warm thanks to Brussels-based correspondent, Patrick Oyewole, for this week’s suggestion…

Gladly welcoming yours to be published next Wednesday. On your marks!
