This Beat Is mine! Marvin Gaye Project feat. Bobbi Depasois - Music Feel The Soul (Choonz Inc.)
I would like to first and foremost address my deepest thoughts to the victims of the suicide bombing which occured back on May 22 this year at the Manchester Arena. And in the meantime, humbly dedicate this beautiful song to them.
This Marvin Gaye Project, as you may guess, was pretty much some unofficial thing as a matter of fact. But what a clever work Andy ‘Madhatter’ Holmes and Joseph ‘Josef’ Postell managed to achieve at the end. What they did is follow the example of Erick Sermon‘s 2001 single ‘Music’ when he embedded archived vocals from Marvin Gaye.
Both of them worked from the same source at the end. In other words, sampling parts of ‘I’ve Got My Music’ which Marvin used as a basis when recording ‘Turn On Some Music’ back in 1982… But how Madhatter and Josef made the difference was to add extra vocal parts courtesy of local female singer Bobbi Depasois over a stellar R&B funky corker.
As you may see, Manchester wasn’t about only Acid House, The Summer of Love or The Hacienda. We also managed to have the groove with people like Rae & Christian and their Grand Central Records label. And also our shopping mecca with long time running Piccadilly Records store.
This Beat Is Mine! (*)
Once in a week (on Wednesdays), IDMW is left with you at the command!
For this to happen, nothing’s more easy… What you’ve just got to do is drop us a line while using our contact form and let us know about your favorite piece of music (*), along with a review explaining what it suggests you and why people should dig it. And the best of it will be given a publication with your credit the week after.
With warm thanks to Manchester-based correspondent, Dennis Kong, for this week’s suggestion…
Gladly welcoming yours to be published next Wednesday. On your marks!
