Millie Jackson – What Went Wrong Last Night

Lost but not least! Millie Jackson – What Went Wrong Last Night (Spring Records)

I remember how thrilled I got when hearing Mille Jackson‘s ‘What Went Wrong Last Night’ back in 1979! From her voice and energy which somehow reminded me of Tina Turner. Therefore putting her in the caliber of divas such as Esther Phillips or Marlena Shaw. To its concept, miles away from what one could hear at the mo’. Rolling over some irresistible rhythm section. With thanks to David Van DePitte in charge of the arrangements. Meanwhile fusing elements of Jazz and Funk together with Blues ingredients. The whole topped with a vocal performance in a unique style. Itself incorporating live spoken word incantations standing as the icing on the cake.

‘What Went Wrong Last Night’ most likely saw the lady reachin’ one of her definitive peaks. As a matter of fact, in a comparable way to her memorable cover version of Luther Ingram‘s seminal ‘(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want To Be Right’.

I guess, despite its obvious particularism, I’ll never understand why the label didn’t give it a single release at the time.
Anyway, its two parts come together as one on her ‘A Moment’s Pleasure’ album. This in addition to her cover version of Exile‘s ‘Kiss You All Over’. All in all, making of this package an essential investment…
