A native of La Havana, Cuba, Mongo Santamaría stands as a major figure in the history of Latin music. A rumba quinto master and a percussionist, he played with many other legends. From Tito Puente to Cal Tjader and Fania All Stars. Thus melting Afro-Cuban Rhythms with R&B & Soul.

His 1963 hit rendition of Herbie Hancock‘s ‘Watermelon Man’ got inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. He would eventually re-record an extended version of it 16 years later on Bob James‘s Tappen Zee label. This with the latter on piano. But also Salsa diva Guadalupe Victoria Yolí Raymond, aka La Lupe, on vocals. Not to mention Gwen Guthrie on the backing…
