Para People feat. Kelly – Macumbe

Single Of The Week: Para People feat. Kelly – From Angola To Moçambique & Panama (Macumbe) (Original Mix) (United Music Records)

If music was only a matter of trends, I guess we wouldn’t have that much to do on the blogosphere. Hopefully, it’s way more than that at the end. As pretty much reflecting the History of humanity. In other words, ours, since day #1. With the blowin’ ‘Macumbe’ standing as a brilliant illustration to this. And, by that, to a globalization process which has always been around…

Let’s first have a look at the forces in presence. On one hand, we have Angolan DJ/producer Edson Júlio, better known as Para People. A man hailing from a Portuguese speakin’ country as a matter of fact. Meanwhile, a quick listen to singer Kelly show us as to how she sings in Spanish. As for the title of this song – ‘Macumbe’ – it sounds like the Portuguese pronunciation of “Macumba” [maˈkũᵐbɐ]. Itself a word one can use to name a musical instrument or a form of witchcraft (or magic). Although one would also use it before to categorize all religions who practiced or believed in animistic-syncretism during the nineteenth century (source: Wikipedia)

As a matter of fact, although not a specialist, I would tend to think ‘Macumbe’ has travelled all over from Africa to Latin America. Hence the subheading in its title: ‘From Angola To Moçambique & Panama’. Its latest episode comin’ up nowadays under the form of this Latin horn-driven percussive joint. Itself serving as the ideal environment for Kelly‘s stellar incantation.
