Tennerz: Romanthony – Too Long (Doctor Dru Remix) (Glasgow Underground)
Most of you will probably remember ‘One More Time’. But what about Romanthony also recorded ‘Too Long’ with Daft Punk back in 2003???
“This is a bitter sweet moment”, said Glasgow Underground label head Kevin McKay. This, at the perspective of putting out the last re-workings of Romanthony‘s vocals. And this is just about the same on these shores as a matter of fact. As sadly brought back to the souvenir of the sudden passing of our beloved brother a couple of years ago.
The remarkable thing is that Doctor Dru has managed to fully recapture the spirit that made Roman‘s releases standing out like no other (ie. ‘In The Mix’, Bring U Up’, ‘The Wanderer…). Thus, cratfing an atmospheric synthed groovy Funk environement that perfectly fits with the man’s vocal performance…
Too long he’s gone already…

Could it be that I may not be objective regarding Anthony Wayne Moore, better known as Romanthony? The answer is 100% yes and I fully assume in the meantime. Not only I felt touched by his music since his early releases. But also he graced me with his friendship from the very first time we met back in 1999 for an interview in Glasgow.
Roman, as we also used to call him, remains among the most underrated talents of his generation. An all in one artist, he wrote sung and produced his music, he got into guitar playing as a kid, accompanying the artists he used to listen to on the radio.
He delivered his debut single – ‘Now You Want Me’ – back in 1991 on his own Black Male Records imprint. This would be the first in a series of one of a kind gems seeing him displaying a unique style. From ‘The Wanderer’ and ‘Falling From Grace’ 2 years after. To ‘Let Me Show Your Love’, ‘In The Mix’ and ‘Bring U Up’ to name a few.
One might remember him as well from his regular collaborations with French Hip-Hop female jock DJ Predator. And probably even more as a matter of fact for ‘One More Time’ that saw him jamming along with Daft Punk in 2001. If not ‘Too Long’. And he also shared the duties 10 years later with Kraak & Smaak on ‘Let’s Go Back’. Then, soon after, on the vibrant ‘Built Up For Love’. A track which we eventually welcomed as our Single Of The Week at the time. Meanwhile, back in 2015, Glasgow Underground released ‘Too Long’ with additional remixes courtesy of Doctor Dru among others.
Romanthony sadly died at the age of 45 on May 07, 2013 at his home in Austin, TX, due to complications from kidney disease.
