Sheila E – The Glamorous Life (Warner Bros.)

With her father being Pete Escovedo and her godfather, the late Tito Puente, it’s fair to say that Oakland, CA-born Sheila E had great chances to be attracted by percussion even though she also plays guitar, eventually collaborating with luminaries such as Billy Cobham, George Duke, Lionel Richie, Beyoncé and Prince to name but a few.
Discovered by the latter at a concert back in 1978, she came to join him 6 years after during the ‘Purple Rain’ recording sessions, providing vocals on ‘Erotic City’. Prince producing her debut single – ‘The Glamorous Life’ – with a distinctive sax performance by the likes of Larry Williams, the same year.
Sheila would soon after serve as Prince‘s musical director during the ‘Sign ‘O’ The Times’ and ‘Lovesexy’ world tour, being for much on his sound back then…
