Sherrick – Just Call (Warner Bros.)

Classics: Sherrick – Just Call (Collect Call Mix) (Warner Bros.)

No matter what, Sherrick most likely had (almost) everything to succeed. Beginning with a one of a kind voice and some undeniable sensibility. But also mention the precious help he received from Berry Gordy‘s former wife, Raynoma Gordy Singleton, who brought Warner Bros. to sign him as a solo artist. Not to mention the contribution of Michael Stokes productionwise. Then the one of John Morales and Sergio Munzibai who eventually remixed ‘Just Call’

Sherrick had (almost) everything to succeed. Almost meaning he also had something that finally kept him away from doin’ so. With that something being an addiction to cocaine that most likely derailed his promising career at the end. The Sacramento native only makin’ a brief hint under the spotlights back in 1987. This with an eponymous album that would be his one and only. The latter spanning two singles. Beginning with ‘Just Call’, his most famous one, makin’ of him almost a one hit wonder. This in addition to ‘Let’s Be Lovers’ although to a lesser extend.

As a matter of fact, John Morales and Sergio Munzibai‘s remixing work sounds like another piece of art. Not only bringin’ Sherrick‘s performance to another dimension. But also enhancing the initial funkiness of the track while bringin’ atmospheric Latin jazzy vibes to the whole.

What’s the value of your vinyl record?

Overview
A native of Sacramento, CA, F. Lamotte Smith, better remembered as Sherrick opened his account back in 1983. This as a member of Motown act, Kagny & The Dirty Rats. Eventually sharing the duties with Cliff Liles, Jerry Blaze and Marq Torien. With the fourtet releasing a self-titled debut-album that same year. Then, two years after, Sherrick came to contribute to Rockwell’s debut-album (‘Captured… By An Evil Mind’). Then its follow-up -‘The Genie’ – the year after.

Another year on and Sherrick would be given his professional break by the likes of Berry Gordy‘s former wife (Raynoma Gordy Singleton). With the latter getting him to be signed as a solo artist on Warner Bros. Then release what would be his one and only album – ‘Sherrick’ – that same year.

The boiling ‘Just Call’ most likely stands as his signature cut. This with remixing work courtesy of John Morales and Sergio Munzibai.

Not that far away from Kashif, vocally speaking… Sherrick didn’t manage to capitalize on his obvious talent though. With his reluctant cocaine addiction not only destroying what was meant to become a promising career. But also his life, thus passing on Jan. 22, 1999 in Los Angeles, CA, at the age of 41.
