Snoop Dogg – Who Am I (What’s My Name?)

Classics: Snoop Dogg – Who Am I (What’s My Name?) (Death Row Records)

From Long Beach, CA Snoop Dogg got discovered by G-Rap mogul/entrepreneur Dr. Dre. With the latter featuring him on his 1992 ‘The Chronic’ debut-album. Then Dogg doing the same with his ‘Doggystyle’ album the year after. This in addition to the soundtrack for the Dr. Dre and Fab Freddy‘s ‘Murder Was The Case’ film in which he also starred as an actor.

The lead single of ‘Doggystyle’, ‘What’s My Name’ started it all for Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr. (that’s his real name) as a matter of fact. Thus runnin’ on a clever blend of interpolations from George Clinton‘s ‘Atomic Dog’ and Parliament‘s ‘Give Up The Funk’ together with various short samples.
‘What’s My Name’ served in the meantime as the typical illustration of what was to become a dominant West Coast style. In other words, the G-Rap or G-Funk where one can find other artists such as Warren G (remember ‘Regulate’). But also Tupac, Willie D and other Ice T to name but a few…
