Sparks – Tryouts For The Human Race (Elektra)

Classics: Sparks – Tryouts For The Human Race (Elektra)

At first sight, one might once again wonder what Sparks have to do with (and on) Indamixworldwide. Then once again, the answer will be pretty much the same in such circumstances. With the concept of ‘Tryouts For The Human Race’ pretty much speakin’ for itself as a matter of fact…

Although they first appeared back in 1968 (initially as Halfnelson) at the initiative of the brothers Mael (Ron and Russell) in Los Angeles, CA, Sparks became a UK teen Rock sensation in the mid-70’s. This with hits such as ‘This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us’ or ‘Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth’. Then, with their success somehow declining, they eventually came to redefine themselves. Thus leaving their traditional Rock band line-up to embrace some more Electronic synthetized sound. This along with Italian Disco producer Giorgio Moroder.

From their 1979 ‘No. 1 In Heaven’ album, the syncopated ‘Tryouts For The Human Race’ is pretty much in the vein of Donna Summer‘s I Feel Love’. But also Giorgio‘s ‘From Here To Eternity’. As emphasized by the use of fascinating lines of layered sequencers built upon Keith Forsey‘s energetic drum patterns. With Russell Mael‘s distinctive falsetto voice overdubbed and complemented by backing vocalists.

Certainly to be considered as among the foundations of what we nowadays know as Electronic Dance Music…
