Tashan – Read My Mind (Long Version)

Lost but not least! Tashan – Read My Mind (Long Version) (Def Jam Recordings)

‘Read My Mind’… With no offense intended, who da hell does ever remember of that singer by the likes of Tashan? In other words, of Thomas Jerome Pearse! Most likely those who have a certain idea of quality music. Including Soulpersona who eventually revisited Tashan‘s ‘Read My Mind’ as a part of his ‘Soulpersona “the Remixes” Vol. 1’ digital album back in 2011.

As a matter of fact, Tashan had “the misfortune of being stylistically in the wrong era. His songs being too earth and raw for the urban contemporary mainstream. And obviously not Southern and bluesy enough for the Southern market.” As brilliantly depicted by Ron Wynn in AllMusic. From then, no wonder as to how nor why Tashan‘s music didn’t get the attention he truly deserved. And the fact that he brought some R&B vibes on Russell Simmons‘s famous Hip-Hop label Def Jam Recordings may not have been of any particular help neither…

Almost 30 years have gone since the man’s debut. And it felt like givin’ him a mention on these shores would be a good idea. This via the smooth Funk-bass-driven ‘Read My Mind’ from his 1986 ‘Chasin” album. The whole over a bumpin’ Boogie drumbeat that seems to find its origins back in the days of the Electro / Breakbeat. Meanwhile more or less reminding of Kashif in terms of vocal arrangements…
