The Main Ingredient – Happiness Is Just Around The Bend (RCA)

Initially formed in Harlem, NY back in 1964 as a trio called The Poets, comprising lead singer Donald McPherson, Luther Simmons, Jr., and Tony ‘Panama’ Silvester, then using the Insiders name for some time, The Main Ingredient appeared under what would becoe their definitive guise 4 years later. Cuba Gooding replacing Mc Phearson soon after his death from leukomia, in 1971.
Under the direction of producer Bert DeCoteaux (Crown Heights Affair), the group came to fame with the the million-selling smash ‘Everybody Plays the Fool’, released in 1972, which would become their biggest success.
Taken from their 1974 released ‘Euphrates River’ album, the Brian Auger written ‘Happiness Is Just Around The Bent’ definitely contributed to their popularity, eventually given a cover version 9 years later by the likes of Cuba Gooding (although he left the band in 1978) with production work courtesy of Arthur Baker.
